Google unveils new open-source normal for agentic commerce

Google has introduced a brand new open-source normal for agentic commerce known as the Common Commerce Protocol (UCP).

Developed in collaboration with various commerce firms, together with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Goal, and Walmart, UCP establishes a typical language and primitives for the commerce journey between shopper surfaces, companies, and cost suppliers.

“As shoppers embrace conversational experiences, they anticipate seamless transitions from brainstorming and analysis to last buy. Which means it’s essential to help real-time stock checks, dynamic pricing, and instantaneous transactions, all throughout the consumer’s present conversational context,” Google wrote in a weblog publish.

In response to Google, present infrastructure doesn’t help agentic commerce properly, and companies are required to construct new connections for each floor they wish to join. It constructed UCP to deal with this bottleneck by offering a single abstraction layer between providers.

The 4 key parts of UCP are:

  1. A single integration level for all shopper surfaces
  2. Shared language to standardize discovery, functionality schema, and transport bindings
  3. Extensible structure that may scale as new agentic experiences emerge
  4. A security-first method that gives tokenized funds and verifiable credentials in order that brokers and companies can securely talk.

“UCP is constructed to energy agentic experiences throughout the commerce ecosystem. It creates a transparent language for shopper surfaces (corresponding to AI Mode on Search, Gemini, and others) to hook up with enterprise backends (for product discovery, cart checkout and so forth) in a standardized and safe approach,” the corporate wrote.
